Adventures in Wearable Objects
A fact I love is that humans have adorned themselves for at least the last 115,000 years. Shells, animal teeth, bone and stone are among the earliest known forms of jewellery according to archeological evidence. I wonder what it meant to those prehistoric people.
Throughout the ages and to the present day, jewellery continues to function and hold meaning in so many interesting ways, from protection against evil to symbols of wealth or rank. But for me and my work it’s about spiritual connection, feeling good and expressing the playful, joyful beings we truly are.
Making wearable objects is my way of appreciating the beauty I see in the world and celebrating our existence within it. From the blurriest vision right through to a fully resolved piece, the process of gradually bringing an idea into focus through thinking, drawing, paper models and test pieces, is immensely satisfying, even with its ups and downs. Good design, craftsmanship and wearability are absolutely fundamental.
Each piece I make - large or small - is charged with positive energy, like a battery - potent and powerful, made to be discovered, owned, loved and worn.
I love knowing that when a piece is finished, it leaves me to have its own journey, becoming part of someone else’s story, someone else’s identity, which is an incredible honour.
